ABSTRACT

Objective The aim of this study was to explore the regulatory effect of calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) on nitric oxide synthase (NOS) and the nitric oxide (NO) pathway in tibial fracture (TF) healing in the rat model of highly selective denervation. Methods A total of 60 SD rats were randomly divided into three groups of equal number, TF control, TF + sensory denervation (SD), and TF + motor denervation (MD). At 1, 2, 3 and 4 weeks after modeling, osteotylus samples were obtained from the rats for observation of the bone morphology and determination of the expressions of CGRP and NOS by immunohistochemistry and HE staining. Results At 2 and 3 weeks after modeling, the rats of the TF+SD group, as compared with the TF controls, showed significantly decreased expression of CGRP (0.150±0.014 vs 0.210±0.013, P<0.05; 0.143±0.017 vs 0.203±0.013, P<0.05) and that of eNOS in the osteotylus (0.170±0.016 vs 0.219±0.026, P<0.05; 0.158±0.016 vs 0.201±0.013, P<0.05).Conclusion Selective denervation, especially sensory denervation, may change the expression of CGRP and thereby that of NOS in the osteotylus of the rat with tibial fracture, which consequently affects the growth of the osteotylus and fracture healing as well.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo test and compare the color and translucency between the mono-component light-cure adhesive resin and try-in paste with same number for porcelain veneer restorations, and evaluate the consistency of the materials.

METHODSVariolink Veneer and Relyx Veneer were involved in the study. The adhesive resins and try-in pastes were added into a model of diameter of 10 mm and thick of 2 mm with white background and covered with filtered cover glass, and then the resins was cured with light. The color (L(*), a(*), b(*)) of these samples was test and ΔE was also calculated to evaluate the color consistency of samples. The resins and try-in pastes were made into a thin layer of 0.15 mm, and their translucency was tested under the light from 380 µm to 780 µm. Average translucency was calculated. Tukey t-test for multiple comparisons was used to analysis the differences of ΔE. Paired t-test was used to analysis the differences of translucency of them.

RESULTSTukey's t-test shows that the evaluation of ΔE of TR (1.11 ± 0.18) was a; those of LV-1 (6.38 ± 0.45), LV-2 (5.94 ± 0.19), A1 (7.54 ± 0.20), WO (4.24 ± 1.14) were b; those of HV + 2 (10.90 ± 0.41), HV + 1 (11.48 ± 0.17), LV-3 (10.69 ± 0.13), B0.5 (13.26 ± 0.21) were c; and those of HV + 3 (21.94 ± 0.21), MV0 (29.78 ± 0.14), A3 (32.67 ± 0.19) were d (a, b, c, d meaned that the consistency of resin and try-in paste became lower and lower). There were significant differences between resin and tray-in paste in 7 colors (A1, TR, HV + 3, HV + 2, HV + 1, LV-2, LV-3) of 12 colors (P < 0.01).

CONCLUSIONSThe consistency of color and translucency between most adhesive resin and try-in paste with same number is low. This kind of materials should be used with caution in demanding cases.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the clinical effects of one stage surgical treatment of thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis by anterior radical debridement with bone graft fusion and posterior pedicle screw-rods system fixation.

METHODSFrom February 2002 to March 2007, 21 patients who were 45.3 years old on average with thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis, including 13 males and 8 females were underwent surgical treatment of posterior pedicle screw-rods system fixation, correction of deformities, anterior radical debridement, bone graft fusion. Among them, 3 patients had 2 involved vertebras, 17 patients had 3 involved vertebras, and 1 patient had 4 involved vertebras. The patients were all complicated with kyphosis deformity with an average Cobb angle of (28.0+/-9.7) degrees. According to the Frankel neurological function grade system, 3 cases in grade B, 5 in grade C, 1 in grade D, 12 in grade E. All the patients received antiphthisic treatment with isonicotinylhydrazide (INH), rifampicin (RFP), Ethambutol (EMB), pyrazinamide (PZA), and support therapy in preoperation. The chemotherapy was continued 9 to 12 months after operation. Neurological functions of all cases were investigated, and radiography was analyzed pre-operation and post-operation to determine the state of bony fusion and the correction of spinal kyphosis. Statistical analysis was made according to the preoperative and post-operative Cobb angle.

RESULTSThe follow-up period ranged from 1 to 6 years with 2.5 years on average. All the patients had primary healing of the incisions. The Cobb angle was (9.8+/3.3) degrees in post-operation. The kyphosis deformity was corrected 17.2 degrees in thoracolumbar on average (t=-13.48, P<0.01). According to the Frankel neurological functional grade system, 1 case was in grade C, 3 in grade D, and 17 in grade E.

CONCLUSIONIt is effective for patients with thoracolumbar spinal tuberculosis in correction of spinal kyphosis, reconstruction of the spinal stability and bony fusion by anterior radical debridement with bone graft fusion and posterior pedicle screw-rods system fixation.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo observe a short-term clinical effect of pin-ledge retained metal plate resin-bonded fixed partial denture (RBFPD).

METHODSSixty-five patients were restored with the pin-ledge retained metal plate RBFPD. Retention and marginal integrity of RBFPDs, secondary caries and mobility of abutments, and gingival bleeding index were clinically evaluated immediately after cementation and every 6-month period later. The parallel irradiating X-ray films were also taken to evaluate alveolar bone resorption.

RESULTSA total of 74 RBFPDs were made for all 65 patients. The mean follow-up period was 12.4 months. There were three RBFPDs debonded and the debonding rate was 4%. Nine patients had abutment dentin sensitivity after restoration (14%) with a mean duration of 6.3 months.

CONCLUSIONSThe pin-ledge retention form could increase the short-term survival rate of the RBFPD obviously and obtain favorable clinical effects.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo study the effect of pre-restoration bleaching treatment on tensile strength of resin bonding agents to deep enamel and its duration, and to estimate the optimal timing of porcelain veneers bonding operation after bleaching treatment.

METHODSA total of 96 extracted human permanent teeth were allocated into 6 groups, 16 teeth for each. In 5 study groups, 80 teeth were bleached using 35% hydrogen peroxide activated by cold light. Right after bleaching and at 1, 4, 7, and 14 days after bleaching, the teeth were prepared with removal of 0.6 to 0.8 mm depth of enamel respectively. And then each study group was divided into two subgroups and bonded with resin bonding agents A (One-step plus) and B (Single bond). In the control group, 16 unbleached teeth were divided into two subgroups and bonded with the two bonding agents respectively. The tensile bonding strength was measured.

RESULTSThe tensile strength was [(17.79 +/- 3.53) and (19.41 +/- 3.37) MPa], [(17.50 +/- 4.29) and (19.66 +/- 3.48) MPa], and [(18.39 +/- 3.58) and (19.53 +/- 3.21) MPa] right after bleaching 0 day, 1 day, and 4 days, which were significantly smaller (about 30%) than that of the control group [(25.94 +/- 4.88) and (28.02 +/- 4.36) MPa] (P < 0.001). At 7 days after bleaching the tensile strength [(22.46 +/- 3.98) and (23.74 +/- 5.04) MPa] reached 87% and 85% of that in the control(P > 0.01). At 14 days after bleaching treatment, the strength [(26.03 +/- 4.47) and (27.88 +/- 4.78) MPa] reached the same level as that in the control (P > 0.01). There was no significant difference in bonding tensile strength between the two resin bonding agents.

CONCLUSIONSThe bonding strength of resin bonding agents to deep enamel was low during 2 weeks after bleaching treatment. It is suggested that porcelain veneer bonding operation should be performed till 2 weeks after bleaching treatment.

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVETo analysis the relationship between esthetic characters and satisfaction degree of patients.

METHODSNinety patients requiring single anterior tooth restoration were treated in clinic with all-ceramic crowns. A visual analogue scale (VAS) was used to assess the satisfaction degree of patients after treatment. Clinical assessments were made by a prosthodontist in characters of feature, surface texture, hue, color distribution, incisal transparency, and individual characterization of all-ceramic crowns. Color-difference between the crowns and corresponding natural teeth was tested by Vita Easyshade electrical colorimetric instrument. The relationship between the last two items and patients' satisfaction degree was analyzed.

RESULTSThere were significance differences in the different degree among all the six esthetic characters (P < 0.05), except good and moderate degrees in the character of hue (P = 0.553). And color distribution, individual characterization, and surface texture of the crowns showed high correlations with the satisfaction degree of patients (r = 0.485, 0.472, 0.467). Total color-differences, absolute value of hue-differences, and Deltaa between restorations and corresponding natural teeth were related to the satisfaction degree of patients, and Spearman correlation coefficient was -0.434, -0.371, and -0.406 (P < 0.05), respectively.

CONCLUSIONSAll the esthetic characters assessed in clinic were related to the satisfaction degrees of patients, especially color distribution, individual characterization and surface texture. Total color-differences and hue-differences were correlated with the satisfaction degrees of patients as well.
